| | | Typically, the vast farms in Kenya mean a huge range is available to the most discerning of customers and with continuous development and improvement in production techniques, as well as operating up to and even beyond all European standards, quality is assured. This has happened with the help of Dudutech, who have developed a system of integrated pest management which means that all toxic chemicals have been virtually eradicated. The latest traceability technology ensures that every bean, onion, leek and carrot can be traced back to its farm, block or even its row. | | | Brian Allen, Farm Manager: “We’ve got a program called ‘Muddy Boots’. This is for complete traceability of whatever has happened in the blocks we have planted. So, by the end of the program, we will have a complete history of exactly what has happened in that block”. | | | Once the crops are harvested, they are kept chilled to keep every last bit of freshness in them, and are then sped down to Nairobi. Here, traceability is still key, and each and every crate of vegetables will be logged, including those from the outgrowers. | | | At this high-tech facility, there are four factories; two for high class prepared products, which require washing and processing. A feature of the other two premium-pack factories is the installation of three custom-designed average weight packing systems for runner beans which took Flamingo a year to design and implement. Each evening the chilled product goes over the road to the waiting plane. | | | Once in Britain, the pre-packed and labelled produce is distributed by Flamingo UK. Andy Jones, Commercial Director, Flamingo UK: “We have hand prepared sliced runner beans, hand shelled peas and vegetable mixes. We also have fine beans and extra fine beans, which are produced by our outgrowers in Kenya. | | | We complement our production from Kenya by dealing with supply sources all over the world. Products include sugar snaps from Guatemala, mange touts from Zimbabwe and asparagus from Peru”. So by sourcing vegetables from all the exclusive supply bases from around the world, Flamingo are providing 30,000 tons of product to British customers through these high street outlets each year. | |
